About the Declaration Foundation The Declaration Foundation is a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to restoring the principles of the Declaration of Independence to their rightful place in American life. It is not a political organization, and takes no position on candidates or elections. Rather, it aims to educate Americans of all parties and persuasions about the God-given rights that underlie our republic. The Foundation intends to work, patiently but energetically, to develop a deep awareness of the role and duties of all Americans in restoring respect for life, the family, and personal and political self-government. Through its publications, website, newsletter, and its work in the communities of America, it endeavors to nourish enlightened and responsible citizenship. To all who have come to this website, we say, "welcome." We want to hear from you, and more than that, we want you to join us in this great work. We ask you to inform us about the good things in your communities and schools, and to let us aid you in correcting the bad. Since our effort is grounded on self-government, we intend to be a user-friendly, interactive center for American civic life. We want your thoughts on our publications, your insight into the conditions of our times, especially in our schools and colleges, and your ideas and plans for a revival of our common, Declaration-based civic life. Our project is grounded in hope. We are firmly convinced that underneath the surface of our current follies and sorrows, there still may be found a vein of gold. We firmly believe that America is good, and can again become great, if only she remembers her true self. We ask you to join us in this faith and hope, and work with us to restore, in these, our times, the wisdom of our founding. The Declaration Foundation's Mission The mission of the Declaration Foundation is to assess the existing state of American civics education, both in schools and in the citizenry at large, to foster what is good, and to supply what is deficient. Above all else, we aim to restore the principles of the Declaration of Independence to their rightful place in the minds and hearts of our fellow Americans. Our Specific Goals:
About Dr. Richard Ferrier, President of the Foundation: Dr. Ferrier was a vice-chairman of the "Yes on 209" campaign, and helped train speakers and produce materials for the effort to ban preferential treatment on the basis of race or sex in California public institutions. Proposition 209 passed by a 9% margin, and made CA the first state in the nation to prohibit preferential treatment under "affirmative action," in accord with the original charter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was the chairman of the Ventura County [CA] Republican Party in 1992, served on the CA Steering Committee for the Keyes for President campaign in 1996, and worked on the Keyes2000 team as well. Dr. Ferrier has taught at Thomas Aquinas College since 1978, and is on the Board of the California Association of Scholars. His writings have appeared in many newspapers and journals, including Heterodoxy, Academic Questions, the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union Tribune, and the Ventura County Star. He is also the higher education correspondent for the California Political Review. Dr. Ferrier's academic interests include, besides the American Founding, classical philosophy, especially physics, and the growth of mathematics during the Scientific Revolution. Together with a colleague, Dr. Andrew Seeley, Dr. Ferrier has co-authored the first of what is planned to be a series of civics books for the use of high school students and adults seeking to understand the Declaration and its role in American thought and history. Each individual set comes complete with a teacher/parent manual as well as a compilation of additional readings. He has been active in church and civic affairs, and has written on education, family, and life issues. Dr. Seeley received his Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto. Both Dr. Seeley and Dr. Ferrier reside in Santa Paula California, and both are married, with large families. The Ferriers have 8 children, and the Seeleys 6.
